Requirements/Recommendations for Remote Access

Requirements/Recommendations for Remote Access

  • Remote access support
    • Signature Bank will only provide support for the remote access software/service and any bank owned equipment.
    • You are responsible for the use and maintenance of your personal equipment.

  • Personal Computer
    • The remote software can support one or two monitors
    • Windows or Mac is supported, though Windows is recommended and the most supported. Linux distros are not supported.
    • Windows machines should have the following specs:
      • At least Windows 10 (older versions are End-Of-Life and should not be used!). Windows 11 recommended.
      • At least 8 GB of RAM.
      • Highly recommend to have a Solid State Drive (SSD) over the older Hard Disk Drives (HDD).
      • Storage size should be based on your needs and preferences but you should not use more than 85% of the storage capacity. Using more can cause performance issues.
    • Computer should stay up to date with the latest patches. Automatic updates are recommended and is the default setting for modern versions of Windows.
    • Anti-malware software should be installed and running. Windows Defender is built into modern versions of Windows and provides sufficient protection. Be sure the software is active and automatically updating virus definitions.

  • Reliable internet connection
    • At least 30 mbps is recommended. 10 mbps minimum.
    • More bandwidth recommended if multiple people will be using the internet connection at the same time
    • Highly recommend using a 3rd party WiFi router. Routers provided by your internet service provider are usually underpowered, restrictive, and require a monthly fee. The IT Officer can recommend a router.
    • Setup QoS rules if your router supports it. QoS rules can make the computer you are using for remote access a priority device on your home network so it gets any available bandwidth it needs before another device, like one that's streaming Netflix or YouTube!
    • Make sure your computer is getting a good WiFi signal.
      • The best positioning of a WiFi router is typically the center of a home at the highest point possible.
      • Avoid placing the router in a closet or cabinet as it can degrade the signal.
      • Routers and modems can overheat so never place anything directly next to or on top of these devices (this applies to computers too!). If you do choose to store these devices in a closet or cabinet, make sure there is adequate air flow.
      • Generally, the closer a computer or mobile device is to the WiFi router, the better the signal
    • Directly connecting your computer to the router using an ethernet cable is always faster and more reliable than WiFi.

  • Security
    • WiFi must be protected using a password and at least WPA2 encryption
    • WiFi passwords should be at least 20 characters in length and not easy to guess
    • Recommend using a guest network with a simpler password if you like to share WiFi with guest. Most routers support a guest network out of the box and are easy to setup.
    • Direct connection to your router by ethernet cable is the most secure
    • Never use public internet access, like at a hotel or coffee shop (Personal mobile hotspot is okay)!
